KOM Consulting, PLLC is a state and local tax consulting firm founded 10 years ago by Mike Roben, after spending 16 years in public accounting. We provide a variety of state tax services including nexus determinations, tax compliance review, tax controversy, voluntary disclosures, sales/use tax accrual and compliance processes and other state tax related consulting and planning. While specializing in Washington excise and multistate taxes, we represent local, national and global companies in a variety of state and local tax matters. In particular, we represent some of the largest global companies before the Washington State Department of Revenue and various local jurisdictions in various stages of the administrative process, including appeals and executive hearings before the Director of the Washington State Department of Revenue as well as high-level personnel in other taxing jurisdictions. KOM also represents companies before local government agencies, including appearing before various city councils and hearing examiners.

KOM is currently acting as the state & local tax department for a $600 million publicly-held client. KOM is responsible for all state and local tax filings, working with outside providers for state and local income tax compliance and consulting, managing audits, preparing tax accruals, performing tax account reconciliations, planning, and coordinating with company personnel for tax planning and to obtain needed information for compliance.

Mike Bernard has helped Business Taxpayers manage their State and Local Tax Obligations since 1991. He has particular expertise dealing with State Departments of Revenue, County Assessors, as well as other governmental entities and authorities. Mike has been heavily involved in the development of excise and property tax law and regulation at the legislative and agency levels.

Mike received his undergraduate degree from Washington State University in 1979. He received his law degree from Gonzaga University School of Law in 1984. He is a member of the Washington State Bar Association.

Mike is a former Chair of the Board of the Association of Washington Business (AWB). Mike also served, for many years, as the chair of AWB's Tax and Fiscal Policy Council. Mike was elected to the Issaquah School Board in 1995 and served on the Board until 1999.

Ben Han has been advising private and public sector clients on state and local tax matters for over a decade. His comprehensive practice includes state and local tax planning and controversy, including Washington B&O and sales and use matters, with an emphasis on legislation and tax policy. Ben partners with and represents a broad range of clients in the high technology, manufacturing, financial services, and service industries.

Most recently, Ben was a manager of state and local taxes with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) where he served in the role as a Washington state specialist on behalf of the national indirect tax practice.

Prior to PwC, Ben served as Tax Policy Counsel within the Legislation and Policy division of the Washington State Department of Revenue, where he advised state and local agencies and worked closely with the Legislature and Governor's office on influential tax matters surrounding digital products, tele­communi­cations, and renewable energy. Earlier in his career, Ben held senior positions in the high technology start-up and financial services sectors.

A Navy veteran, Ben holds a B.S. from University of California, Davis, a J.D. from Marquette University Law School, and is licensed by the Washington and Wisconsin Bar Associations.

John Katsandres has been advising clients on state and local tax issues for nearly 14 years. His primary practice areas are Washington state and local taxes and multistate taxes. John represents clients in audit defense, appeals, settlement negotiations, drafting ruling requests, refund claims, corporate transactions and planning, representing clients ranging from small businesses to Fortune 500 companies.

John began his career at Arthur Andersen, later moving to KPMG and Alvarez & Marsal. In 2008, he formed Katsandres Legal and Tax Consulting, utilizing his expertise to serve clients in the financial, technology, manufacturing, real estate, e-commerce, and traditional retail industries. John holds a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Washington, a J.D. from the University of Arizona College of Law, and an LL.M. in Taxation from the University of Washington School of Law. John is licensed by the Washington State Bar Association.

Mike has been advising clients on state and local tax issues for over 25 years. His primary practice areas are Washington state and local taxes and multistate taxes. Mike represents clients in audit defense, appeals, settlement negotiations, drafting ruling requests, refund claims, corporate transactions and planning. He also advises clients in evaluating legislative and regulatory changes. Mike has represented companies of all sizes from small businesses to Fortune 500 companies across a variety of industries, including financial services, retail/wholesale, manufacturing, and service. He also speaks on various state tax topics at continuing education programs and represents industry associations. Mike is licensed by the Washington State Board of Accountancy.

Prior to starting KOM Consulting in 2005, Mike was a Director of State and Local Taxes with the Seattle office of PricewaterhouseCoopers from May 2002 through July 2005 and a Senior Manager with Arthur Andersen prior to May 2002. Mike holds a B.A. in Business from the University of Washington.

Gerald Swanson has been advising clients on state and local tax issues for over 18 years. His primary practice areas are Washington state and local taxes and multistate taxes. Gerald represents clients in audit defense, appeals, settlement negotiations, drafting ruling requests, refund claims, corporate transactions and planning. He also advises clients in evaluating legislative and regulatory changes. Gerald has represented companies of all sizes from family owned businesses to Fortune 500 companies across a variety of industries, including financial services, retail/wholesale, manufacturing, and service. He also speaks and teaches on various state tax topics at continuing education programs and the University of Washington School of Law. Gerald is licensed by the Washington State Bar Association.

Gerald began his career at Ernst & Young in 1997. He joined PricewaterhouseCoopers in 2004 as a Manager, later advancing to Director. After 15 years in public accounting, he joined KOM Consulting in 2010. Gerald holds a B.A. in Business from the University of Washington, a J.D. from Gonzaga University School of Law, and an LL.M. (Taxation) from the University of Washington School of Law.
